Need hardware advice

So, I'm accepting a Stafford loan for school, and one of the things I can do with the money is purchase a computer. I think I'd like to build my own, so I need advice on hardware. No, I will NOT get a laptop, I hate them with a passion and will only use them if I have to. The screens are too small and the keyboards and mice hurt my hands

and just because you need one voice of opposition - have you considered a laptop and using a keyboard and mouse?

One pays a considerable premium for laptops, and they're not very upgradable. One of the newer netbooks might be worth considering, since they're very portable.

yeah, a net book with keyboard, mouse and monitor that you can just pick up and go would be ideal from my POV but... if she's not planning on taking it anywhere

No, a keyboard and mouse don't change the screen size. I just don't *need* something portable.
