Day One

Recently, Jesse and I stumbled upon this channel on cable called "Planet Green". They were airing an episode of Morgan Spurlock's (of "Supersize Me" fame) now-failed show, "30 Days". The show forces people to spend a month living in someone else's shoes.

The episode we caught was a non-drinking mother having to spend 30 days as a binge drinker as her daughter is in college and binge drinks.

Anyone that knows me in person know that I am a binge drinker. For those that don't, I'm talking a 12 pack every Friday and Saturday and anywhere from 4-6 beers on week day nights. It gets so bad that I don't remember half the shit I'll screw around with online until I discover the damage the next morning.

My job performance also suffers as well. Going in hungover on beer, prescribed sleeping pills and 6 hours of sleep doesn't exactly go over well for a job that requires use of math.

As such, I've been inspired by "30 Days" to live my life as a teetotaler. I technically started yesterday, but since I will be attending Epcot's Food and Wine Festival with my family on October 29th, I'm documenting today. I will remain sober every day until the 29th.

Every night I will log how my day went without alcohol.

It might sound easy for some of you, but for me it's not. All I ever based my life on was drinking. Sports? Beer. Birthday? Beer. A good work out? Beer. The dog sneezed? Beer. So it's time to enjoy life as it was intended: clean.

My goal is to have a better handle on my mood, a clearer mind at work and a healthier outlook. And if possible, see if I can go with having a few drinks on the weekend and none during the week, when all is said and done.

I'm disabling the comments for each entry. This is strictly a project for me and possible entertainment for you readers. Not input is necessary. :)

Soooo, without further delay, Day One:

Going to bed sober Monday night felt great. However, it seems I've become so used to my pills being mixed with alcohol when I go to sleep that I didn't sleep well. At all. Jesse gets up for work at 4am, so I woke up at 3:30 in anticipation of his alarm going off. After that, it was toss and turn every 20 minutes until my alarm went off at 6am.

Work was fine. I was extremely tired and my leg was bothering me (sciatica on the right) so that was slightly aggravating... and I got foreclosure papers delivered to my office. No court date yet. Still annoying.

Didn't get to work out today. It was raining mightily when I got off work. Thankfully Jesse walked the dog earlier in the day so she's happily passed out in front of the front door.

I was worried I would feel like I have nothing better to do, but I've been keeping busy with laundry and screwing around the apartment. Jesse is playing softball. He's off on Tues/Wed. That will be a slight challenge as he likes to drink hard as well--but mostly on his "weekends". Thankfully he's an incredibly supportive person and is 100% behind me on this and will help me cope with the idea of not drinking when others are.

Tomorrow is a gym day. I feel a slight sense of pride in knowing I'll be going in "straight" and going to bed the same as well. I've read that drinking after lifting weights screws with your muscles. Won't repair as well or some shit.

I'm scared for the weekend. I had planned on seeing some girlfriends Friday night--I'm going to stick to it, but keep with Sprite Zero.

Anyway, we'll see how that all folds out the rest of the week. Keep your fingers crossed. I can't let myself down now.
