California was fun. Would have been more fun if the weather hadn't been at the 'hi, this is what hell would be like, kthx' temperature levels. (why yes, I am a delicate flower of womanhood, thanks for asking - everyone who I actually met during this visit, you can all stop laughing now ( Read more... )

My gods, this would be the pulao/biryani that EVERYONE in Britain eats all the time if reports about curry sweeping the nation are to be believed? You couldn't make this stuff up. Marvellous, marvellous.

Oh yeah, well, you see, SOME versions were fine. It's just those crazy ones with LIME JUICE and freaky ingredients like that, apparently. (And now I miss Singapore. Lime juice ftw - I can only get cordial here and it's just not the same).

There is also a recipe for haggis. WHY?

(I think, statistically, the English eat more curry these days than fish-n-chips. It's one of those factoids they bring up in newspapers occasionally. We can't help it, we're English, and our cuisine is the same as our language - full of stuff we nicked from other countries and then mangled to suit our tastes).

O_o My heart, she bleeds for your limejuicelessness. (We don't even keep lemons in the house anymore because we just use limes for everything. I can hardly imagine life without the little green bastards.)

I can get limes, just not very good ones. Produce here sucks.

VERY COOL BOOK. I love that the book got embellished with the extra scribblings on bonus pages!

And I wish to have a recipe for fairy cake. Because earlier today Ken and I decided 'fairy' was our theme for the day, since fairies have cropped up multiple times without our planning.

HEE. And it's 'Fairy Pudding', not fairy cake:

Fairy Pudding (as hand written in ink opposite a recipe entitled Pastry for Friar Tuck's Mock Venison Pasty Pie)
Put one breakfast cup water & one tea cup sugar with juice of two lemons to boil.
Mix 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornflour with water & add to the boilng mixture & boil for 2 or 3 minutes.
Whip the whites of 2 eggs to stiff froth & mix all together - Cool in mould.

It goes with 'Custard Sauce', presumably in order to do something with the yolks:
1 teaspoon cornflour to 2 teacups of milk with the yolks of 2 eggs, sugar & salt: heat till it thickens: pour over the mould.

Do you want a recipe for Pink Pancakes? Warning: Involves beetroot. Promise: Involves brandy. It's on page 69. There's also an entire section on home-made liqueurs...

I've saved off the Fairy cake Pudding recipe! Yay!

Yes, I think I do want Pink Pancakes. I could pour them carefully in the shape of Hello Kitty, and freak Ken the heck out.

260 - Pink Pancakes

These are rarely seen at an English table, although they form a very pleasing variety. Boil a large red beetroot until it is very tender; then peel it, cut it into thin slices, pound it to a pulp in a marble mortar, and strain through muslin; add the yolks of five eggs, two tablespoonsful of flour, four of cream, plenty of pounded loaf sugar, half a nutmeg grated, and a wineglassful of brandy; rub the whole into a batter, and fry the pancakes with melted butter, ghee, or lard; served them up hot, garnished with green candied sweetmeats.
