Merlin: Increasingly campy, less fun. Provides opportunities to show K how, via youtube, people do special effects make up to simulate wounds and frozen-looking skin.

I love At the Water's Edge. I seem to remember that some of the whale evidence got contradicted after publication (I think the land progenitor turned out to be a bit different), and the consensus may have changed again since I last looked into it. Somehow that made the story even more fascinating -- that there's still so much to discover.

Glad you liked it! Yes, there is always more to learn. Yippee! I'm reading everything I can find by Zimmer (right now it's Microcosm). In this case, I knew his data was old but people still recommend him on the big picture of tetrapod evolution. The idea of exaptations alone made my month. :)
