How did the most rotten kids in the country end up in my group?

I swear, these are the worst behaved 8 year olds I have EVER seen. If some of these kids were my kids, I'd bitch slap them for the way they're acting. There is no excuse for not only NOT listening to, but completely defying an authority figure when you're that age. You obviously can't be trusted to do anything yourself. Physical discipline only works if you use it in moderation though. It should be considered a tool only in the utmost cases, because otherwise the child becomes immune to it.

Personally, I consider physical labor a better punishment. No kid likes to shovel huge mounds of rocks from one end of the lawn to another in the hot sun. Now I'm not saying let the kid get heat stroke or exhaustion or anything, but make them work hard for long enough, and they'll never do it again.

Ha, that's a good idea. I never really thought of that. I always equated chores with money, not as punishment. I guess that comes from the fact that I used to do them and get an allowance.

And of course, in hitting, I don't mean beating the tar out of them. There's a very fine line between discipline and child abuse, and you have to be careful not to cross it. That's another thing that makes parenting so hard.
