I find today astonishingly, grayingly depressing. It is not even 10 a.m., and already I've seen the cops harass two impoverished, possibly homeless black men, for no immediately clear reason. One of the cops got on a packed train to force the sleeping man off. No one, including me, said anything at all. He was just sleeping, for Christ's sake ( Read more... )

I have no illusions about the power of my livejournal to effect change. Hahaha. There are only, I think, 7 people who read it, anyway. But, I figure 7 people is a mightier force for good than 1, by pure mathematics. And this kind of thing CAN be contagious, in small ways.

And I don't think Chicago is the only place that has this problem. It's just that Chicago has a very active demon sitting underneath it, sucking on the living souls of the people living there. Not strong, just insidious...

I'm trying to wear brighter colors. When I got my bright green umbrella I noticed that people started smiling at me downtown, where most of the coats and umbrellas were black. You're right. It doesn't take much. Colors and smiles, man. Just small acknowledgements of our shared humanity. Just anything.

The beautiful thing is, the more of it you give, the more you can give.

What IS going on with the CTA, apart from gross mismanagement? What the hell are they doing with all those fare increases?
