Car-less

Despite my reputed class privilege (presumably social), I have been finding it really hard to make ends meet and pay off my student loans. I lived off credit cards during periods of unemployment (dot-bomb, esp) because my age, education and lack of children excluded me from public assistance (I was offered less than $20 in MUNI tokens, once, ( Read more... )

You can always make up for the privileged class and qualify for public assistance by developing a healthy crack habit.

It has crossed my mind.

believe me - I thought about telling them I was taking cash for sex just to get public assistance.

but, no, I just used cash advances and ran up a pile of credit card debt for rent, PG&E and groceries.

Pretty easy in the bay area. Much less hassle and headache. Good to cultivate friends who can give you rides.

At one point, my boyfriend and I were living in SF and worked out that it was cheaper to rent a car for one weekend a month than to pay for garage, insurance, break-ins, fuel (and you can't put a price tag on the ever-present parking hassles!). Worked well for us!

Good luck. I'm thinking about a scooter or motorcycle, my work is poorly situated to commute by bicycle, bus or foot....

Yeah - well - your town is much different!

I don't need to cultivate friends for rides -- there isn't that much I need to do that I can't do on bicycle, foot, bus or train. Except camping - and I live a few blocks from "Rent a Relic" where I can get a 2003 Ford Focus for $150 for a week!

I'd totally get rid of my car if I wasn't such a car-lover. Recently I only use it once a week or so anyway. I just like to have it because I like to drive fast.

Another option is to get an ultra cheap one and just not use it much. Insurance/payments would be low that way. Or a motorcycle. But if you can get by completely without one, even better!

Soooo... bought another cage in 2021. It's better to evacuate with cats in a cage than on a bike.
