Quick question for a friend looking for long-form blogging options (that I'd be interested in as well).
We're looking for something akin to a modern day Livejournal or Dreamwidth. I'd rather not create a Livejournal (it's dead and Russian owned) or Dreamwidth (It's mostly dead). Preferably free.

This is something i have struggled with a lot, because i am really not interested in microblogging, short videos or image sharing etc. The popular suggestions over the past few years have been Medium and now Substack, but from my perspective both of those platforms are evil because they are backed/owned by the usual Silicon Valley VC tech bro crowd and they aren't really focused on building communities but on monetization and engagement. The reason i have stuck with LJ despite its very problematic ownership is because i don't feel like as an English-language writer here i am being pressured to monetize or increase my engagement or do cross-promotion for other blogs etc. That kind of commercialization makes me sick, although maybe your friend won't be bothered by it.
The only other platform i have considered is Ghost. The reason why Ghost appeals to me is that the company is a non-profit structure and the software is open source, so if you want to set up your own instance you can just do that, a bit like Wordpress. But i think they ( ... )

Ghost was one that came up quite a bit. We ended up going with Wordpress because it was fairly easy to setup, and served her purposes of a nice Livejournal-y blog. As another friend said "It's a nice site. It's very Word Press...but for Wordpress, it's really nice." :D
If I ever get so fed up with Livejournal that I leave, and I want more than DreamWidth (which I'm actually very happy with, it's just got zero traffic), I may migrate to Wordpress as well.
