I go both ways on this. While I commend Eliot for taking an interest and trying to make some meaningful change in the Executive Branch, he stepped on a LOT of toes (not just Shelly's, but that's probably the most notable) when he refused to nominate ANY Assembly candidates and only nominate three people (as opposed to the agreed upon five).
He would have done better to stick to the five that was agreed upon and deliberately NOT picked the favorites (i.e. Brodsky and Connor, for example). Then, if Shelly and Bruno went against him (which, whether we like it or not, it IS their prerogative to do so), they would have looked a lot worse, and he would have still looked pretty damned good to most people.
However, as it stands now, even those who didn't want to see another insider get picked are siding with Bruno and Shelly on this one, on pure principle. A lot of people that LIKE Eliot and LIKE his ideas and HATE Shelly and Bruno and the entrenched BS are really unhappy with how he handled this whole situation.
See, I have nothing against DiNapoli. Except his lack of financial experience. Granted, he was on Ways and Means, but what else? Granted only picking three candidates instead of five was probably not the best idea in Eliot's book (I was just glad my guy made it that far) but there was no need for the Lesislature to go off on a foot stomping tirade like a three year old. I for one am glad he didn't pick any Assembly members. I didn't want an insider, and I still didn't side with Shelly or Bruno. 38 days in and there is already a battle brewing. This is not going to be pretty. Te people who voted for DiNapoli do not speak for me. Amend the state constitution to call for a special election, so the people *can* speak for themselves (yes, I know this is unreasonable, but it's just a thought). If I let my elected officials speak for me, I'd actually hae to believe Assemblyman Will Barclay and the pro-life, anti stem-cell research Senator John McHugh. No thanks.
Oh, believe me - I am not disagreeing with this! I just think the whole bit was handled poorly by EVERYONE. It started out well, and then ... downhill.
Only semi-related - Diana Jones Ritter, the Deputy Comptroller, is now the Cmsr for OMRDD. Because developmental disabilities have SO much to do with state finance.
And, hopefully DiNapoli will surround himself with financial experts and just handle the political end of things - and surprise all of us. As for Eliot - I wouldn't be surprised if he supported a primary candidate in Shelly's district in '08!
