I've done it in a 4 step process

1 - Sloppy Copy - just let the words flow
2 - Self Edit - make it readable and fix what you know
3 - Peer or Teacher or Parent Edit
4 - Final Copy

Step 2 allows a place to fix common mistakes. Step 3 a place to learn about how what we write is understood. etc.
