Where or how do you look for airfare?

I need to fly between Portland or Seattle and New York/New Jersey, or I suppose, Boston. I need to be in New Haven on the morning of July 18.
I thought I had a decent amount of time to get the ticket, but lots is sold out.

So far, I have tried

cheapflights.com
travelocity.com
lastminute.com--this didn't work. I'm not close enough yet, but the prices ( Read more... )

Kayak culls all the other travel sites you mentioned -- official carriers and bargain search sites. You can filter to incorporate budget, flight times, stops, airports, the whole nine.

In terms of New Haven: New York or Newark seems more obvious but consider flying direct into Bradley International Airport in Hartford, CT. You'd have to hop a cab or shuttle to downtown Hartford proper (it's like 25 minutes down the highway) and then either train it to New Haven or find a car ride down 91 South. Either way, from Hartford to New Haven is no more than an hour door-to-door.
