I went to inquire about a cat at the humane society today, a 7 year old cat named Oreo that I thought would be a good companion to Ghidrah. Not only was the whole process an insane and humiliating farce, the woman implied i was lying about my age, income, education level and living situation. She told me that it was "my word against hers" and that ( Read more... )

That is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm sorry you had to go through that, it sounds like the woman had some kind of complex. I sincerely hope she was a volunteer and not paid staff (though neither would be appropriate for treating a potential adopter this way).

She was paid staff. One of those alpha-femal types. I have written a letter to the President and Vice President of the Board of Directors, as well as the Operation's Manager. Even if she doesn't like me she should at the very least attempt to establish if I am a suitable person to take a cat home, as opposed to deeming me unfit and then challenging me to prove otherwise, without actually listening to my responses. I was actually hurt and insulted that someone insinuate that I am unable to care for an animal or that I am not taking the decision seriously. The cat I wanted has been in a cage since her owner surrendered her the first week of August. I'm really glad you've written letters, hopefully they'll realize what kind of people they're employing.

I would have been furious at that kind of treatment too. It's completely unacceptable.

:O What a terrible thing to have to go through! Is there a complaints process you can go through to report this woman? You're so correct, their only concern should be with housing animals with good, caring homes. What did she want, a freakin medal for being the only person in the world to truly care about cats? Ick ( ... )

Though I appreciate a solid screening process, I think sometimes SPCAs loose sight of what their goal should be and they actually impede their would-be adopters who are perfectly fine home with a umber of questions that they deem to be more important regarding the ins and outs of caring for pets in general. What makes me nervous about this process and the one your sister went through is that there are lots of easier ways to get a dog or a cat... ways that prop up terrible situations for animals, like pet stores, puppy mills and kitten breeding, and actively discourage people from rescuing animals ( ... )
