This is just so random - I never post anything here. But I have to say this, and I'm wondering if the possibly, oh, 10 people on my flist have noticed this and feel the same way

I think we've all used that phrase at some point. And then we all cringed. ^_~
What gets me is "lightning" versus "lightening". Oh my GAWD. I can't even explain the rush of irritation I get when I come across that REPEATEDLY in fic. It gets me more than any other lately.
Weirdly enough, I also read "lightening" for "lightning" earlier just this evening - and yes, that makes me cringe as well! In fact, I think that's a pet peeve I added to the Death Dogs M7 site once upon a time when they were collecting such things....I felt better afterwards. *g*
I've seen it a couple of times lately in pro fiction, so I guess it's something we can't blame on inexperienced (or untalented) writers of fanfic. Just gotta grin and bear it, I suppose...
Oh, no, not blaming inexperience, really - it's just amusing and annoying to me how many times I come across it, as if so many writers think it's an awesome expression. And it's gotten to the point where it makes me want to scream. So when I saw a really talented writer use it, I sorta lost it...
I'm sure I use phrases/words in my writing that ping other people the same way!
*g* The expression is something of a cliche, but I love the concept (it happens to me a lot).
What gets me is "dashing sweat from his/her eyes". Sweat in the eyes buuuuuurns. You can't dash it out, you pretty much have to rinse it out with water or cry it out.
Huh, I just noticed that you replied to my ranty rant! Bless you! How did I not see this earlier? Ah, well...
Yes, I am sure we all have things in fic that drive us mad, for one reason or another! And you're right about the "dashing sweat" - it just sort of sticks there. Uncomfortably. Like when I was walking home from the bus in 100 degree heat this afternoon....
