Subaru struggles to find his way in the sea of people dancing, singing, laughing and drinking through the loud music. He swears under his breath, cursing his dear friends for ditching him while he went to the restroom. So much for a fun night guaranteed by those two. Now, he can’t go back because he had left his wallet and phone with Hina before going to the restroom. He vows the first thing he’s going to do tomorrow is to let Hina and Yoko knows just how angry he is right now.

In between his rage and his struggle, he manages to get out of the crowd to the balcony where he found himself a breath-taking view of the sea presented before him. Now he remembers vaguely that Yoko did mention something about the new club being located near the sea. There’s nothing he can do except to admire the beauty. He was deep in thought when suddenly a sweet voice interrupted it.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it? The night sky of a sea.” says the voice.

When he turns toward the owner of the voice, trying to voice out his annoyance of the interruption, he stops half way. Or, more like, the words are caught in his throat. It’s him, he thought to himself. It is the guy that has caught his attention the moment he laid eyes on him. At first he notices the blond hair, but when he saw him smile, he can’t help wondering how can anyone have that kind of smile? A smile that is brighter than the stars. Indeed, God really works in a mysterious way, but he also notices the sadness in those eyes. If he didn’t know better, he would think that the eyes and the smile belong to two different owners.

“Why?” he blurted.

“Eh, what do you mean why? It’s beautiful because it’s beautiful, isn’t it?” slowly, that smile fades into a look of confusion.

“No. I mean, why are you so sad?” he persists.

A soft chuckle escapes him before he simply shrugged off by saying “I don’t understand what you’re saying.”

“You’re not a very good liar you know. Did anyone tell you that before?”

Silence, except for the sound of the wave slamming onto the fine grain of soil of the coast.

“What would you do if I were to walk into the sea right now and drown myself?” So sudden and it is so irony for that kind of question to come from such a sweet looking blond.

“I would not stop you.”

“Why?”

“It’s your life. It belongs to you. It’s up to you if you want to live or not.”

“You’re interesting you know. Did anyone tell you that before?”

“I get those sometimes but I’m not being interesting. I’m just being me.”

“So are you happy being you?”

“Are you?”

“So we’re back at that huh?”

“Life’s like that. Sometimes you have to turn around to figure out the answers.”

“Life also guarantees that you cannot find the answers to everything. “

“It should work that way. If we know everything about life, there’s nothing we can look forward for.”

Silence again.

“I saw your friends. I bet you’re looking for them.” Suddenly the blond switches the topic.

“Have you been eyeing me all this while?” Subaru can’t help a smirk.

“Only because I notice you have been eyeing me first.”

“Well, I won’t deny that. You didn’t particularly try to hide yourself anyway, which means I’m free to watch, deshou?”

“It’s your eyes, not mine.”

“So, you said you saw my friend. Where exactly?”

An obvious blush rise to the blonde’s cheek when Subaru ask that question and Subaru thought, can anyone be cuter than this.

“I saw them making out in the car when I was at the parking lot a few moment ago.”

“Those two. They really can’t wait.” Subaru’s anger resurfaced. He started to turn around, to make his way to the parking lot. He didn’t make it to the third steps when he turns around towards the blonde guy.

“Ano, your name?”

“Shota.”

“Shota? I’m Subaru. Would you like to go have a drink with me? Non-alcoholic drinks I mean.”

The blonde simply smile and nods to the invitation from his new found friend.

“It’s on you though. I don’t have my wallet with me right now. And, I hope you can give me a ride home later too.”

“You do realize you’re being too demanding don’t you? I didn’t even know your name a few minutes ago.” Again the irony when those words said with a smile that says the total opposite.

“I realize that, but I also realize that this won’t be our only encounter so I’ll make sure make it up to you.” Subaru smiles his earnest for the first time that night.

………

“Your friend wouldn’t mind you leave without a word?” Subaru ask the blonde once they both got their orders from the waiter.

“You should ask that before we leave, don’t you think?”

“Sorry, it didn’t cross my mind before.”

“It’s fine I guess. After all, you told me my life is my life, so I get to decide, right?”

“Right.”

“How nice if life is as easy as that.”

“Why? Isn’t yours?”

“It is tonight. At least.”

The silence at the balcony returns again. So does the sad pair of eyes.
