The smell of summer was drifting in the hot air of the Ajihara district as the young Ohkura Tadayoshi was coming back home after a long, tiring day in school. He treated his education more like a daily pursuit. Through all those years he became convinced that learning wasn’t really a problematic thing for him. Ohkura knew that if he wanted to achieve any task, or just to get some good grades, he can do it if he only found any verve for this.

Life in Osaka had its own rhythm. For Tadayoshi-kun, this ‘rhythm’ was a mixture of small daily routines. In example, evening had a sweet smell of fried okonomiyaki coming from the bar which he was passing by every day in his way home. Every time he was going through that street he felt the pulse of people’s steps under his feet. At 5.20 p.m Osaka’s residents were usually in hurry coming from jobs or schools. Tadayoshi also loved evening sounds of the city: single cars driving down the street,  the murmur of a train approaching the Tsuruhashi station. It didn’t matter if it was rather sunny or a rainy day. Ohkura just liked to stop for a while, next to the shops district, and look up into the sky, enjoying this detailed rut in private.

And so did he also that day. He closed his eyes as the sun was softly warming his face. After a while a red lamp lightened up in his mind as he started having this feeling that maybe he looks strange for other passers-by just standing and doing nothing. He spin his feet and gave a glimpse to the shops’ windows. In the one moment his heart started to beat faster. He saw her. There. Inside the Kayashima’s store. She was wearing a red, polka-dotted dress and had the most beautiful brown eyes Ohkura had ever seen in his life. He stack his nose to the pane like he was a little boy looking at the candies through the window of the candy store. But she wasn’t a cake or any other sweet. She was real.

Ohkura observed her carefully. She was  just shining. Her dress was red like a ripe cherries. It seemed that her dress was blushing with that red just because of its own beauty. This color contrasted perfectly with the deep brown of her eyes. In one hand she looked a little bit like one of those olive-skinned beauties from far away countries. However, on the other hand she was similar to a geisha who is tempting men with her immaculate charm and fabulous dresses.

In his mind’s eye Ohkura saw them together. He will be her hero! He will be her knight rescuing her from the prison of the abandoned castle. Together they will spend hours reading books about those so distant lands of Europe or Africa. They will fight with tigers at the wild forest or sail around the world! She will be a perfect companion for his imaginary as well as the real travels. He will be her samurai, her prince charming! And she… She will be his court lady, his Snow White! She will be everything he has ever wanted and everything he has ever wished for. Ohkura came unstuck off the shop window, took a deep breath and came into the store. “It’s do or die!” he thought.

‘Oh, so you liked the one from the newest collection’, said the shop owner, old Kayashima-san while he was taking down the little teddy bear called Seppenko from the shop window. ‘I thought that she will draw your attention as fast as you saw her, Ohkura-kun.’

Ohkura picked the bear up. Seppenko was so fine and light as she were a real snow flake. Her fur was light cream beige, almost white. Her head was decorated by the big red, shiny ribbon which was glittering even in the most delicate rays of light. In her big eyes Ohkura saw reflection of the setting sun.

He paid for his newest friend and went down the street. The sun has almost came down. While he was waiting at the station for the train to home Ohkura turned around once again and watched the sunset. Some of the last single rays were reaching the district of Ajihara painting the sky with pink and orange. Ohkura grabbed his cellphone and took a quick photo. He thought that the photo will look great framed in the wooden frame. He will put it at the shelf next to his bed and his today’s purchase will look very grateful sitting next to the picture of the evening sky.
