I only got to "Frankly, I don’t think it’s fair that people be penalized for not thinking like bankers." before I wanted to break something. Not spending money you don't have is not thinking like a banker. If your bank offers overdraft protection and you don't want it, opt out. If they don't let you, switch banks. If you didn't know about it, it's your own damn fault for not reading the papers you signed. It's not rocket science.
It's funny how that one commenter brings up the European banking system as an example. While, yes, it's more modern, it works according to the same principle. If you spend the bank's money instead of your own, you pay. Overdraft protection, called a "Dispo" here, is very common. It's usually granted based on your monthly income, and you pay interest for using it. And if you don't want it, speak up and the option is gone.
