Charming and dangerous

The estimable Jonathan Shaw, to whom I will always be grateful for accepting two of my earliest stories ("Bertie" and "Alistair" - both ghost stories, of a sort, and both for The School Magazine), has reviewed The Duties of a Cat. Among other things, he says,

"Like cats themselves, the poems can be charming and dangerous in the same breath."

"That blue point pelt as long as winter." Such a handsome fellow.

I finally picked up a copy of "Duties" at Kinokiyuna. Such a handsome little thing in itself! It is a good review and upon consideration, I think the quality he identifies as "charming but dangerous" is the same melancholy, at once pleasing and disturbing, I found throughout this collection. I have been dipping into it as kind of a emotional safety valve over these past weeks, with all their various goings-on. Although my favourite piece may well be "Dream Hunt", it is "Learning How To Be A Cat" that replays in my head as I watch our two hunt toy mice, reels of thread and dice. So, thank you and congratulations!

Thanks so much, Kyla - that's so thoughtful and excellent - a mini-review in a blog comment!
