Two Posts in One Night

I'm entering into an essay contest to win money for the shelter where we got the boys. I'm limited to 300 words. Let me know what edits you'd make.

What are the chances?

That weekend in June started out like a lot of weekends in June across America: with a parade involving rainbows. It did not end like most of the parades with rainbows in June: with a girl and a boy meeting and falling in love.

I’m Jenny, the girl in this story. Jack’s the boy, we’ll get to him in a minute. I had just purchased a home in Denver with my partner, Kim, and we decided to take time away from unpacking, painting and the usual nonsense of buying a new home to celebrate Denver’s Gay Pride - a festive event that celebrates all kinds of families with a parade and community fair.

We went to the parade and on to the festival where, from across the park, I saw the most handsome brown eyes I’d ever seen. He played coy - hiding and looking at the man he was with, but I eventually coaxed him out with cookies and ear scratches. He was hesitant but I could tell he thought if I had cookies and ear scratching skills, I couldn’t be all that bad, right?

His name was Jack Junior and he was with a group out of Ft. Lupton, Colorado - Every Creature Counts. They rescued from one of the municipal shelters and brought him to the festival with the hope of finding him a forever home. He was so handsome wearing a rainbow bandana with his stocky build, perky ears, and under bite that I couldn’t help but bring him home.

In the end, I guess the chances were pretty high that I would fall in love with such a charming boy.
