Out of curiosity, have you read either LJ Smith's teen thrillers, or Kelley Armstrong's young adult books? They certainly neither of them are stuck in the "it's always the boyfriend with superpowers" mode, as formulaic as they are in many ways

I have read Armstrong's first YA series, and the first book in her second YA series, and I thought they were all rather good. A little bit addicting, in fact. :)
I haven't read any of LJ Smith's books though, I will have to try them.
