A couple of years ago I was spending Christmas with my parents. Between Christmas and New Year, I persuaded them to go for a couple of days B&Bing round Skye --- I forget exactly why, now. We were driving back past the Cuillins and had pulled off the road for lunch, perched in a layby with Scalpay on one side and the mountains on the other; it was a clear, crisp winter's day with just a faint layer of cloud blocking the sun. Bloody cold, so we stayed in the car.
After a while I spotted a bird circling off in the distance. "Hey, look, a kestrel," I said. It got closer.
A little later we realised it was too big to be a kestrel. A buzzard, maybe?
A little after that we realised it was really huge, a shortly after that we realised that it was still about three miles away. And then the clouds cleared, and the sun shone down and the bird lit up in brilliant yellow...
It was a golden eagle.
Damn, I need a holiday --- I want leave all my bloody plasterboard and plumbing and find a mountain...
