definitely the sound i made when i read that. mmm...
surprised that came from the message, though. i got turned off to it a while ago...but maybe i should give it a second chance. that's the most poignant scripture i've read in a while...phrasing, at least.
It's actually from the Message Remix (and slightly modified by Jenny), which I got as a goodbye present from the council office. I was skeptical at first too but I used it at least a billion times this summer at Quinipet. Some parts are really good. Some parts aren't.
One can trust and not be trusted. One can love and not be loved. But can one hope and not be hopped? I suppose so (hopped for by others), but it doesn't hurt as bad.
Everyone understands that trust is earned, then why do we expect to 'fall in love?' Damn Walt Disney.
Love is realer than hope, but not as real as trust.
Trust comes from memories of experiences as does love (that is until someone can specify chemical reactions and electrical impulses); hope requires relating memories of experiences to desires and wishes (even those birthday wishes).
Thus I say hope is the greatest because hope is creative and we are seldom let down by it, unlike trust and love. Further, trust and love depend on other people, which cannot always be done.
I suppose though, if completeness were prevalent then these concepts would bear no toll because all would be ONE. Like Buddhist say...
"Of all powers, love is the most powerful and the most powerless. It is the most powerful because it alone can conquer that final and most impregnable stronghold that is the human heart. It is the most powerless because it can do nothing except by consent" -Frederick Buechner, Beyond Words
