Earlier today I was listening to music on my iPod. "The Grog Song", from Michael Longcor's album Boarding Party, came up. On a whim, I looked up a recipe for grog.

Sounds like a good place to start! Brown sugar seems like a good compromise, too. It still has a fair amount of the molasses IN it, but is a solid, and lacks some of the flavors people sometimes dislike in molasses.

I eagerly look forward to trying this one.

That was pretty much my thinking. I'll probably have the molasses handy, and add a tablespoon or two if it seems to need it.

Grog was the rum based drink that sailors in the British navy got a daily ration of until about 1970. I've heard a bunch of different theories for how it started, but the two most common are:

1) They started adding rum to the water to keep it from going bad as quickly and to encourage the sailors to keep drinking it even after it had started to get nasty. The citrus and sugar were later additions to improve the flavor.
2) They required the sailors to drink citrus juice to prevent scurvy, and added the rum and sugar to make it taste better. Then they started diluting it with water to reduce the likelihood of guys being too drunk to do their jobs.
