M IS FOR MILITARY
Atlantis was a bit of a culture shock. I’d been assigned to various civilian-run outposts before. Invariably, it was a “military-vs-civilian” thing.
But Atlantis… Atlantis was different.
There was no “bully-the-civilian”. There was no “us-vs-them” mentality. I had been stunned to find that the Gate Teams invariably had a civilian scientist - and the flagship team not only had that, but two aliens as well!
I figured things were so different simply because the payoffs and bullying just hadn’t gotten this far out yet. So, I took matters into my own hands and started setting up the systems I was used to on Atlantis.
I swiftly learned two things. First of all, people on Atlantis weren’t interested in the systems - at all!
And secondly, the head science officer and military head were both metas who were super protective of their people!
……Pun not intended.
So, confused and completely out of my element, I went to talk to Major Lorne.
That is a move I have never regretted.
Major Lorne listened patiently as I told him - well, everything. Then he leaned back in his chair and just talked to me for the better part of an hour.
And I learned.
Because I had acted out of ignorance and not malice, I narrowly escaped charges. As it was, I quickly dismantled what I’d begun to set up and I made reparations to anyone I’d harmed.
I took something the Major had said to heart.
“Be good to Atlantis and her people - and she’ll be good to you.”
He was so right.
