Addictions, they all start out the same.

Someone in your life, usually a friend or a co-worker, suggests something to you one day, something you just have to try. Maybe it’s drugs, maybe it’s booze, maybe it’s something simple and clean like a piece of cake from the bakery near your job, regardless; out of curiosity, you say to yourself, “Hell, why not?” and you try it. You always say you’ll only try it once, but we all know that’s a lie. You try it again and again, out of fun and a slight desperation for that exhilarating experience, but before you even know it, you’re hooked.

That’s what happened to me, Kato Shigeaki, modest lawyer living in Tokyo with my cat figurines and cactus plant. Life continued in the same fashion it always did, I showered and took the train to work, I ate lunch in my office and then I went home, watching TV til I was exhausted enough to sleep. However, one day my routine was interrupted by a co-worker, inviting me out to dinner with his friends to some karaoke club the young twenty-somethings regularly visited. I wanted to decline, clubs and alcohol and singing weren’t really my thing, but I figured, “Hell, why not?” and I joined them.

We get to the club and are ushered into a booth, a large tv screen hanging on the wall, wires connecting it to the karaoke machine in the corner. My co-worker’s friend, Tegoshi who is studying psychology, squeals loudly and runs to the machine, fiddling with it excitedly. Masuda, another friend who is a swimming coach, laughs at Tegoshi before joining him, grabbing the two mics from the table. Soon enough, music fills the room and the two begin singing, Tegoshi’s powerful voice and Masuda’s unique voice taking me by surprise and blowing me away. As they’re singing, our waiter enters the room.

Oh my God.

To say he was gorgeous would be an understatement. He was perfection, long tan limbs and broad shoulders, tiny waist and a sparkling smile. He was so sexy in his tight black pants, but he was also unbelievably cute, his already tiny eyes even smaller as he smiled widely at us, skin glowing under the fluorescent lights. But it wasn’t just his beauty that enslaved me, it was also his voice, deep and smooth like something you would hear on the TV or maybe the radio, a voice that was hypnotizing and left me in an embarrassing daze, as he shook my shoulder, “Sir, what would you like to drink?”

A week after that fateful night, I called up Tegoshi and Masuda and asked them if they wanted to go out again. They did, and so we met up at the same club, got ushered into the same booth, and were sent the same sexy-gorgeous-cute-waiter as before. Koyama, that’s his name. I managed to answer him this time when he asked for our drink and food orders, and when he came back, Tegoshi and Masuda were already singing cheerfully with each other.

“They’re quite talented, huh?” He asked me and I nodded, and I had to contain myself from jumping up and down and squealing when he sat beside me, taking a sip from Masuda’s drink, “So, what’s your name?”

“Kato Shigeaki,” I smiled, “But um, you can call me Shige, if you like.”

Koyama laughs and nods, “Shige, alright yeah, I like that. Well, if you excuse, I better go serve my other customers.”

And with that, he left, but not before winking at me on his way out.

Oh dear.

I went back to that club again and again, sometimes with Tegoshi and Masuda, sometimes with my old college buddies and a few times, alone. When I went alone I sat at the bar in the main room, and when he didn’t have another customer, Koyama would join me at the bar and drink, but mostly we talked. I had managed to find out his first name was Keiichiro, his parents owned a ramen shop and he had an older sister, who had a young son. Koyama, or Kei-chan as he later told me to call him, was working at this club in order to get by through school, where he was studying literature and Asian history.

I never knew it was possible to be addicted to another human being, but damn, I was addicted to Koyama. I couldn’t get enough of him, his light brown hair, his single eyelids, the way his nose crinkled when he laughed, his tan tummy I saw a glimpse of that time he stretched in front of me - yeah, I was addicted, and I didn’t know what to do about it.

I ended up doing something about it, by asking Koyama out on a date. To my surprise, which I’m glad I was able to contain by not screaming like a teenage girl, he said yes and so he came over to my apartment. I made us dinner, a simple spaghetti plate one of my clients, Akanishi, recommended to me. After dinner we cuddled on the couch, a movie playing in the background that neither of us really watched. Koyama ended up falling asleep in my arms, and as I spent four creepy hours watching him sleep, I realized I had a big problem.

I was falling in love, and not just that, I was falling in love with a gorgeous and cute man who could possibly never love me back.

Right?

I was addicted, I was falling in love, and I was holding my cheek in my pain after Koyama smacked me across the face, for doubting his feelings. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who was addicted to another human being; I never realized that Koyama staked me out in the club the same way I staked him out. I never knew he changed his schedule around, or that he almost got fired for ignoring other customers, in order to hang out with me. I never knew Koyama was falling in love with me too, until he told me, smiling his big sparkly smile as his long, tan limbs encircled my waist.

Then he bent down and kissed me, and I kissed him back happily, and we’ve been addicted to each other, and in love, since then.

And we lived happily ever after, til Koyama suggested he wanted kids. That, my friends, is a whole other story.

The End
