Go Veg eh?

@ work, if I am not w/ Kim or Crystal, I usually sit in Jimmy's section (my supervisor) with about 3-4 other boys, this is generally the setup and I actually rarely if ever talk to them. Once in a while I'll chime in when I hear talks about political ideologies and/or Latin American poets. But for the most part I am mum - why I am, I do not know ( Read more... )

That's the one thing that's a real kicker for me- who is to say what animal deserves to be consumed for food and what animal doesn't? I could never imagine eating my chihuahua and that is why I find it hard to eat meat now. I've pretty much unintentionally turned myself off to meat by this thought process alone.

I remember reading about you considering cutting meat out of your diet (I don't know if you have or not yet). If you ever have any questions or need any help, let me know. I'd be glad to do what I can.

It's funny because that was when I first consciously started making the decision to not eat meat. From that point on, it wasn't even a thought anymore, I'm just naturally drawn to non meat options. I probably eat meat about once a week at this point, usually due to some random craving or lack of option when I am someplace out and need something quick. I can't see myself staying a meat eater for much longer, my frame of mind has completely changed and it fucks with my head to think that I am eating the flesh of another living thing. Another positive factor is that it makes me re-examine exactly what I am putting into my body and you start to think about what your body really needs to function.

But yea, that's my vegetarian in training update :) Thank you for the offer on the info. The main thing holding me back from cutting meat out of my diet for good is getting myself the vitamins that I'm going to be missing. Any suggestions?

Bonnie - if you go vegetarian again, I will give you oral pleasures. I hear vegetarians taste better anyway ;-)

Herm, many points i don't agree with, but mostly due to my own ethical reasons.

just wanted to mention that the grain used to feed live stock is almost always a low quality, high yield fodder not fit for human consumption - so while fun to pretend that we could just divert those 'massive quantities' of feed to people, it's just not possible. This is not to say you certainly couldn't replace it with a more suitable grain, but this would cause the gross amount to decrease.

Quaker oats you buy at the store are nothing like the 50lb bags of feed i used to help my grandpa lug around.

Oh trust me - this is one reason I was always so cautiuous of militant vegans - too much propaganda and 1/2 assed truths. However, I believe the statement was also leaning toward the fact that we could use these fields for various other purposes considering grazing animals on a field destroys the land (proof is in the foothills above my house and on the moutains, people who grazed sheep have permanantly scared the land)

I don't believe you need nitty gritty details to stop eating meat. I believe just the pure idea and practice of factory farming and the fact that we do not need to eat meat (we are not some savage carnivore living in the wild) should be good enough.

Anyway - like I need to tell you that. You are vegetarian correct?

Mostly vegetarian, i still indulge in sushi on occasion - in part because it falls outside the reasons for my dietary choices ( ... )

had you not stolen the wind from my sails, i would have proceeded to say everything you already did. alas! i remain but to say: i'd rather, any day of the week month or year, have an associate take down his own free-range deer and eat for the rest of the winter than have any one of us eat at a mcdonald's, wendy's, or burger king ever again.

and also to quote this, one (or perhaps two) of my favorite passages from Tom Robbins' Another Roadside Attraction (in the context of our young heroine amanda's resistance to opening up a roadside hotdog stand):
Due to the fact that she occasionally consumed milk and milk derivatives, she could not be considered a strict vegetarian. "Amanda," purists would scold, "milk is an animal product. How can you drink milk and still consider youself a vegetarian?" And Amanda would answer, "The label states that this carton contains activated ergosterol. Have you ever heard of a cow that activated ergosterol?" But as vegetarians are a stubborn lot, the argument was never resolved ( ... )
