So, should we amend the Constitution to change how the office of President works?

What an astounding article! I had no idea about Hamilton's vision of an "elective monarch" or that Madison originally wanted a popular vote but folded when confronted with the reality that the slave-owning South would be hurt by it. (I remembered the 3/5 insult from History classes, but not the details ( ... )

I think the federal system still has merit, even if the current state boundaries are outdated. Even in this crazy modern world, regional differences do exist. Perhaps more importantly, the states can act as a testing ground for laws before they become adopted (or not) at the national level. It's not so much preservation of regional diversity as it is strength in diversity, in a Darwinian sense ( ... )

anything about their vision. This is not coincidental. In other places, places where the people demand to know the details of what the candidate's gov't would do for them and don't care about the boxers/briefs question, presidential elections don't take nearly this long or cost this much.

Well, okay, the founders certainly didn't envision the modern Presidency or modern elections. But they knew that, and so they included the provision for amendments, which has been used a lot to change the Presidency ( ... )
