back from a sibling adventure to the canadian border. wine, swimming, throwing many types of balls (i'm enjoying sports a lot lately), barefoot in mud and barnacles, aladdin songs for better service, likeminded word association. i'd forgotten the joy of board games--guesstures, balderdash, scattergories, etc ( Read more... )

I forgot why, but a green flash sometimes occurs during a sunset or sunrise.

"by the way, have you ever seen a green flash when the sun sets below the horizon?"

Funny you mention that. I was staring at the sunset a couple days ago (at the expense of my eyes' comfort) and was thinking I saw something funny and hazy, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

I've never seen/noticed this for myself, but I've read somewhere that if you see the sun set over very deep water, sometimes you can see some pretty strange effects in that short time when you've got not just atmosphere, but also ocean between you and the sun.

yeah, i've seen it a few times...mostly on lake michigan and the pacific ocean when i lived in california. a couple days ago, i saw it over clouds above the olympic mountains. i'm never really sure if it's actually green or just an optical illusion because of the absence of red. either way, i see spots afterwards. but it's worth it.

Sweet, we actually discussed this in a class of mine. What you probably saw was an optical illusion; or actually probably the bleaching of the cones in your retina that pick up the lower wavelengths of light. That would make the yellow color appear green. Although the green is technically in there, it just diffuses too much for our eyes.

Still worth looking though, it's probably still kind of rare that we see it.

i have never seen the green flash. i think it might be a bullshit ploy created by the optical industry to get people to stare at the sun more so they'll need glasses, which would guarantee profits for them. or something.
