why would a single tree´s leaves all be different colors at different times in the fall? its leaves all come from the same tree and experienced the same weather. is there a tree sprite involved in this process? is his name pumpernickel?

my roommates and i have a rocking horse which we inherited when we rented the house.
for reasons i can't remember we named him pumpernickle.
we love pumpernickle, hes a seat when we have guests over, and hes a place to put our scarves and mittens so we don't lose them.
its such a shame to find the true meaning of his name.
such a good friend to us deserves something better.
