Considering that this is reportedly the end of the simpson. The final hurrah, I doubt it would be a joke. I haven't seen it yet but seriously doubt they are going to bring back a character. Well it's not entirely clear that this character is dead, but it is most definitely implied. And also, where did you hear that this was the end of The Simpsons. I mean, they have two other movies under contract already...
The original had been that this was going to be the last season of the Simpson and the movie was going to cap the series off. But I haven't followed the news on that since last year.
I figure dead is dead. And I'd disagree that Marge ever really got a significant point where she was in the sun since the moment you suggest for that was really a moment of Homer's character growing.
Actually so do I. Heck, I saw that movie twice! But that's largely because I've always been a Raphael-ite. Michaelangelo tried a little too hard to be the comic relief in EVERY scene, and Donatello fans just got boned. That being said, I can't wait to buy this movie on sweet, sweet Hi-Def DVD.
It didn't feel like an episode to me. It felt like a movie. An awesome awesome movie.
As for the death, it was a gag death. The simpsons have many gag deaths throughout the series. The ones that are permanant are always dealt with differently, and you see more of the aftermath of it.
