The New KCET

Jan 04, 2011 20:52

On January 1, the Los Angeles station KCET severed it's ties with PBS. It had been the flagship Southern California station, the main PBS station in the region. There are three other stations in the area, two of which I get; but in prime time they more or less showed the same things, only on different nights sometimes ( Read more... )

Great scott! You're sounding like my libertarian Facebook friend!!

Well, truth be told, haven't seen KCET lately, but I've lately discovered that most of my PBS programs can be viewed online at the following site:

I sincerely hope you're joking about me sounding like your libertarian facebook friend. I'm not opposed to PBS, or the tiny, tiny percentage of their funding that comes from the government. I don't see how this argument between KCET and PBS says anything about either one. KCET couldn't survive if they continued to pay those huge fees and PBS couldn't budge or they'd have to adjust the fees for all the other stations that can't survive paying those fees. Eventually PBS may have to adjust those fees and downgrade expectations if they hope to survive, but luckily for everyone KCET did them a favor and left the network, allowing PBS to kick that problem down the court a bit ( ... )

Oh, yes. I know that. I was just joking, recalling that long argument. Just being sarcastic. (Although with TV reception being what it is in my area, until I find a better antennae, the Internet really is my only good option).

Well, I'm glad you were joking. I'm at a low point here, and to be called a libertarian might just be too much to handle.

I really wish my own PBS station would do a lot more independent programming. Not necessarily funding/making it's own, but to set their own schedule. With the exception of Saturday mornings, the programming on my local station and the one I get from the satellite are identical. They have access to so many awesome programs, and yet adult material only airs 7pm-5am, and appears to be 80% talking heads news/politics programs or reruns of Antiques Roadshow.

Why can't we get re-runs of Poirot or American Masters more than once a week?

Presently in order to differentiate themselves and fill their airtime they've gone to showing older or "less popular" programs, which I'm happy about. The "popular" shows all seem to be hyper-macho Irish men and women singing, or old Doo Wop groups with 2 members plus three newbies performing the old hits. I'll take a Champlain documentary over that any day.

But their plan is to start producing more local programming, and I'm a bit excited about that.
