Went down to Michael's in Manchester to get a few decorations for the event, and ended up running into my cousin who works there. She let us use her employee discount, and saved game about $10. Yay!

Marie Antoinette: I don't want to say it was the worst movie I've ever seen...

It started out OK. Scared 15-year-old girl in the most terrifying court in Europe, the relationship between her and the goofy Louis XVI was well done, but it dragged horribly. There were about ten-too-many shots of her wandering the halls of Versailles in pretty dresses not saying anything.

The movie took place over the span of 21 years, but the principal characters never aged. At all. I think this was part of the point, however. To show that the world around the French court was changing quite a lot, but the nobles themselves had not developed, advanced or grown wiser in any way. In the final scenes of the film when the revolution is coming, and there's an angry mob with torches outside the palace, I got my hopes up for a guillotine in the punctuation.

Nothing. No guillotine, no sharp, sudden painful ending. The movie ended with a shot of the royal bedroom ransacked and destroyed.

I appreciated the artistic statement, but I think it could have been better delivered by a shot of Marie Antoinette in a dirty, ragged shift climbing up the guillotine to her death. She could have been strapped in crying, or stoic, it really wouldn't matter - the blade would drop, and just as it was about to make contact, the screen could go to black, and the credits could start rolling.

I really hope this ends up the deleted scenes of the DVD.

Lake Compounce: I don't remember the last time I went to an amusement park without a costume of some kind. The best part was the little girl right ahead of us in line for the wooden roller coaster who looked right at me and said "You're a troll."

I didn't even have the horns on. I merely smiled and said "Yes," and she turned around, and that was the end of it. Kids know. They just do. It's kind of weird.
