I've seen power supplies go bad and cause that type of weird behavior, everything is fine until you increase the system load to just the right point. It could also be a loose drive cable.
I would check your HDD for errors. Boot using XP or Vista disk, and try to get into the recovery environment...
If you cannot get past those sections, and no hardware has changed in your system. Then you should suspect your memory. The XP and Vista boot disks do NOT touch the harddrives until the actual installation.
Do a memtest as described above, and you should find your culprit.

A friends PC was acting weird and we found at 551MB he has bad memory.
