You know, celebrities die every year, and I don't think we are in the midst of any sort of unusually large famous person die-off. But this year seems to have been long on deaths of those long offstage, who are permanently anchored in the memory to a certain point in time - Walter Cronkite, Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, etc ( Read more... )

Wow, I can't believe John Hughes is dead, he pretty much defined my childhood/teenage angst years.

This really does seem like a bad year for celebrities.

I don't think I ever even actually saw John Hughes. But he had such a big influence on what people my age or a bit younger were watching growing up.

First MJ, now JH. This is all getting quite depressing and it's making me feel my age. No more pop culture icons this year, please.

I hadn't really thought about John Hughes in ages, but reading of his death really brought home what an impact he had on the culture that people our age grew up in, not to mention people ever since. I can't really picture Kevin Smith or Joss Whedon or Judd Apatow doing the exact same work they did without him going first.

Exactly! I was surprised when I read the list of his film credits because I never realized that all of these movies that had sort of shaped my young adulthood were all by the same man.
