Push button starters

Apr 21, 2010 21:17

I keep seeing these commercials for push button ignitions on cars and wondering how you prevent kids from starting the car.  Anyone know if there are protections on these things?  They seem cool otherwise (Not that keys are hard to use, but whatever).

I think the car says "hey, Megan, what's happenin'?" in his sexy man voice because he knows it's you, because it's like it's the 80's and the future at the same time.

And then the car starts.

I apparently had the know-how, if not the strength, to open a locked door with a key by age 6. An ignition is tricker, since you usually have to push in while turning (not unlike a child-proof cap on a medicine bottle!).

That brings up the question: How do you keep just anyone from starting the car?

i assume if it is unlocked anyone can start it. which is why i think we must be missing a key (ha!) piece of information.

You keep a little "electronic key" on your keychain. The button won't work unless its proximity sensor detects the electronic key nearby. Some cars also use these for unlocking the doors. You don't need a traditional key--you just need to be standing next to your car. It's an electronic key, I guess you could say, for both door and ignition. The range is long enough that you can just keep it in your pocket.
