Cliches

It's hard not to let a cliche slip into your writing, they sneak in when you least expect it.  There are so many cliches they are hard to escape.  One night just for fun our family took turns listing cliches that contained animals.  We were amazed at how many we found.  Here are just a few. Can you name any?

animals, writing, cliches

Heh, animals are fun. Now I'm thinking all cliches that have to do with food...

selling like hotcakes
like comparing apples to oranges
end up with egg on his face
it's a piece of cake
easy as pie
taking candy from a baby
cool as a cucumber
knows which side of the bread is buttered on
like a hot knife through butter
tall drink of water
nutty as a fruitcake
going bananas
flat as a pancake
bring home the bacon

hehehehe, now I'm hungry.

That was good. I was having a hard time thinking of food ones. You came up with a different ones then I did though.. however yours are much better..

two peas in a pod
carrot top
beet red
That's the way the cookie crumbles
it's a cake walk
he/she is a ham
American as apple pie
what's your beef?
so hot you can fry eggs on the sidewalk
piece of the pie
he/she's toast

Now what about colors???

Funny, but I've been thinking about this same topic... not animals, necessarily, just about the cliches we use and wondering where they came from. Some are logical or you can see where they might have come from, but others seem really weird.
