Alright, I finished the book. I'm putting my initial thoughts behind a cut. I wholeheartedly apologize if you read these and have yet to finish the book.
I lost all affection (which was little) that I had for Snape when he pulled out the Avada Kedavra on Dumbledore. Completely and outwardly showing his devotion to Voldemort. At the beginning of the book, when he explained where his loyalties lie to Bellatrix, I was like 'wow Snape's a good bullshitter'. Ouch. Someone from the community Hogwarts is Home (idk the proper tags), pointed out that Dumbledore was definitely dying anyway, so perhaps Dumbledore and Snape communicated using legilimency and occlumency, and Snape finished him off 1. to not let him suffer (kinda like squashing a bug, rather than partially stepping on it), 2. to 'prove' his loyalty to Voldemort or 3. He really is just an evil, conniving, cowardly git who deserves all bad things to come to him. I never liked Snape, but trusting Dumbledore, I always 'trusted' him(Snape) as Dumbledore instructed. Honestly, for me this book was like reading Fanfiction (not an insult to Jo's brilliance, don't get me wrong) and by the end, I rather wished it had been. (I'm getting way too worked up about this lol)
It just seemed too nice at the beginning, too smooth. Harry basically saying "I'm fine and over Sirius' death, he wouldn't have wanted me brooding." was weird. IMO, Harry took Cedric's death/Voldemort's returning to body a lot harder, and Sirius was his Godfather. And the way that Dumbledore calmly told Harry that he recieved all of Sirius' things and Harry calmly recieving that information was surreal.
I had always thought that Ginny would become a Prefect. Perhaps she did and in my rush to finish I missed it? And if she had not, wouldn't Molly have said something, given that all of her elder children (minus Fred and George) had been? I also feel that the Ginny/Harry romance was so anticipated and it wasn't played out quite as well as I would have thought it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything about the quality of Jo's writing, bc again I say, she was brilliant. (this post is so much longer that I meant it to be...sorry!)Just a few points/opinions/questions left.
*I am incredibly disappointed that Snape was the illustrious HBP.
*How do you pronounce Scrimgeour?
*It is incredibly sucky now that Dumbledore is dead, because the sheer fact alone is heartbreaking, but also that we didn't get all the answers in the last chapter like we always do.
*Did we ever find out what happened to his blackened hand and why was it important, other than that it happened while trying to gain a horcrux?
*haha guess the curse on the DADA post lives on!
