So we're heading into the crazy travel part of my semester. Since I have a presentation and a paper due the Wednesday and Thursday before fall break, and I'm not going to be in Bath next weekend (oh hey Dublin!), I've been a good studious girl and started my paper on the English Civil War ( Read more... )

It's weird...down here in NH the leaves are all starting to turn...but there isn't really a whole lot of foliage yet in VT. It's nice to think the smell of fall is the same where you are though...makes it seems like you're not really all that far away after all.

The English don't do straightforward, at least not in the 1640's.

Well of course not. The English have never done straightforward, ever, in the history of their existence. Didn't they tell you? ;)

The Pope-AntiChrist thing shouldn't surprise you either. We're talking an era of Catholic-Protestant pure hatred here. Especially on the part of the Roundheads, who were kind of Puritans if not forerunners to them/closely related, weren't they? (British histroy tends to get all sloshy and mixed up in my brain, particularly in this period). And if you remember that the AntiChrist is supposed to claim to be holy/righteous/the voice of God/the Messiah returned-Jesus, it makes sense from that perspective. Although I don't think any pope has ever claimed to be Jesus returned, and the fact that there were so many of them seems to make it hard for any one of them to be the anti-Christ... Perhaps the Pope at that time was particularly bad?

Ooooh, Wales is pretty. Did you go to Snowdon?
