Well of course not. The English have never done straightforward, ever, in the history of their existence. Didn't they tell you? ;)
The Pope-AntiChrist thing shouldn't surprise you either. We're talking an era of Catholic-Protestant pure hatred here. Especially on the part of the Roundheads, who were kind of Puritans if not forerunners to them/closely related, weren't they? (British histroy tends to get all sloshy and mixed up in my brain, particularly in this period). And if you remember that the AntiChrist is supposed to claim to be holy/righteous/the voice of God/the Messiah returned-Jesus, it makes sense from that perspective. Although I don't think any pope has ever claimed to be Jesus returned, and the fact that there were so many of them seems to make it hard for any one of them to be the anti-Christ... Perhaps the Pope at that time was particularly bad?
