Panicking is written with a "k" because just attaching the participle ending would make the impression of a soft c. (You'd pronounce "panicing" pan-eye-sing) And doubling the "c" or the "k" would just look awkward.
"Blown our wad"? That sounds vaguely sexual, doesn't it?
