Nope, I didn't disappear; I've just been really sick. Upon returning home from school, I finally got a chance to see a real doctor. Apparently, I DID have a throat infection. Health Services didn't think it was serious; they thought a little saltwater gargleing would do the trick. Anyway, it was strep-throat, and I had let it go untreated for ( Read more... )

Are you sure? I heard that female seahorses are impregnated, then they TRADE and the males carry the young until they are mature.

Actually, that sounds right. I caught it on the Discovery channel last night, so I could have misunderstood what they said. I just thought it was interesting.

Science makes the distinction using the genetic difference. "Males" carry the XY chromosomes, while "females" carry the XX. I don't think physical characteristics necessarily have to apply.

oh. weird! seems like that system isn't entirely accurate, then.

then again, we already knew they weren't really all that good at determining people's genders, anyway.

I think that most scientists would agree that people are a completely separate issue. Otherwise, we would not be grouped in different categories. In any case, it's going to be a long time before we have the knowledge and technology to ask a seahorse its gender preference.

Yeah, health services can be a little iffy sometimes. But I'm glad that you're feeling better!
