I'm always a little behind on Fresh Air, so if you listen regularly, this will be old news to you...

I'm listening to the show with Alice Waters and of course I want to punch her in the face, which is partly her voice and manner, and not what she's saying. But part of it is what she's saying about they way people should eat and deal with food ( Read more... )

I read a lot of gluten-free blogs, and there is one that goes bonkers with the whole "only eat local! only eat what's in season!" thing. She's very proud that she doesn't eat fresh fruit except for, I guess, 4-5 months out of the year, because she only buys what she can get at the local farmers' market. I think it's SO GREAT that in the Modern World, we can have both, really. You can grow your own, or find someone selling organic leash-walked lettuce, or go to Wal-Mart (where, of course, I'm pretty sure they have more and more organic produce). Or you can do a combination, like I'm sure most middle-class people do.

Moderation! Live it, love it.

Now I want to see someone walking lettuce on a leash!

Seriously, I think it is great for the small farmer if we eat local, and I also prefer non-hothouse veggies in season, because I grew up next to a farm. But I buy what is convenient, in my budget, and gets me my vitamins.

Without progress like this, we have scurvy, rickets, beriberi, and all those other diseases they taught us about it home ec.
