That's my scream of frustration with the darkroom and trying to figure out what contrast is and what it does and why its making my prints too dark to see.
jess, i went to photo club in high school about four times to support melinda, so this could be completely wrong and not what you're talking about at all. but i believe that contrast may be the second liquid you dip your picture in. i don't remember at all how long you leave it in there. but if we're talking about the same things, you can make a test photo by setting an original time (1 minute or whatever the normal one is), but covering up all but a quarter of the photo with a piece of paper. next move the paper over a little more, set the timer again, and you'll have a second strip. keep doing this until you're done with the entire photo, you should have a range of brightness and you can choose which time works best for the photos. good luck and i hope that helps.
The second thing that you put the paper in is the stop bath. Contrast is a filter for when you expose the paper. I did the test strips but I think something was wrong because even at 2 seconds it was still far too dark.
