Okay, this is going to be weird, but thequestionclub doesn't have open membership annnd I didn't really feel like waiting and all that.
But I'm pretty sure your sinuses don't get "stuffed up" because they're full of mucus, but because they're swollen and that makes the passages close. So it's not that you're making the mucus go away by doing that. I'd guess that the pressure just opens them up a bit, but of course as soon as the pressure's gone, they close again. As to why it's worse... maybe you're increasing blood flow to the area, and therefore making them swell more?
I'm not a doctor, or anything, though; this is just something I read somewhere. Closest thing I can find quickly is this.
Just from our weird little zombie chat, I've come to the conclusion that you are awesome and I wouldn't mind reading your journal. Because I'm so totally not a stalker or anything....
Hey I just responded to your post in midwifery and thought we may have some things in common after reading your profile page. I just finished my BA degree last year and I am about to start working on my Masters. After that, I'd like to pursue becoming a homebirth midwife. Anyway, I'd like to friend you; feel free to do the same. ;)

You should check out my (autobiography with pics) entry here, since you'll be new to my journal: http://iemaja.livejournal.com/25722.html
Can't wait to start reading your journal, too.
