The estate tag sale I went to on Sat. with my sister

Sep 29, 2003 14:57

I had a wonderful weekend! On Saturday morning Gregg had to mow his Grandma's yard so my sister drove me a couple of miles up the road to an area called Hollyview Forest. I read in the friday paper that there was going to be an "estate tag sale" in a house there because the woman was moving to Ridgecrest Retirement Center. The ad also said there ( Read more... )

yes !
isn't that amazing?
all the yard sales, estate sales, flea markets, and similar sales are really really cheap in the area that i live in. if i had more money to spend i could probably make a living just off of selling the great bargains i find.

here they are generally held on sat. mornings and you can read the classified ads that are in the friday paper under the heading "yard sales" and find lots to go to, with directions. that is where i found the one i went to... i noticed it was only 2 miles away so i decided it was worth finding someone to drive me there!

I will take pictures of everything! I wish Gregg would bring me his digital camera so I could take pictures of the Japanese art because I want to start listing it on ebay today!
There are always TONS of estate auctions in this area... one or two every week at least...
Usually they are typical auctions though and the antique items sometimes are high priced but you can usually find good stuff there too.
This estate tag sale was a rare find because usually people realize that they will get more out of an auction than they would by selling it as though it is a yard sale.

The actual city of Mount Airy has only about 8,000 people living in it but there are far more outside of the city limits and waaaaay more old people than young people. Most of the auctions are held because older people are moving to a retirement center or rest home and they need money so they sell all their belongings. I always get kind of sad when I go because I feel bad going through all their things, all the memories that I don't know about that are connected to each item.... things they may have not wanted to give up but couldn't afford not too...... I just try to reassure myself by saying that I am going to treasure the things I buy.
ohhhhh my god.... Leona Naess is singing on the Carson Daly show and it is SO BEAUTIFUL
by the way - do you listen to Ryan Adams?
If not you really really need to check out his Heartbreaker album. It makes Gregg and I cry our eyes out because it is so beautiful.
Leona Naess reminded me of him because she used to be his girlfriend.

I love The Lady of Shallot, I used to have it on my bathroom wall for the longest time, there's an ophelia painting that reminds me of it as well. All that pre-Raphaelite art is so damned beautiful, romantic, heartbreakingly sexy.

Love you soooooo much,
Jacqui who sucks at being a LJ friend

Oh my gosh! I love how you write. I love reading all these details. Also cool is that you refer to a Lady of Shallott painting. I have a print of this, tucked away in a closet since I moved down here on a Greyhound bus, but I long for the day when I get to put it back up again. And where I get to go to garage sales again, especially the ones of older people who have had whole lifetimes to accumulate things - strange little knicknacks, which, when taken together, tell so much about them, but gradually pass hands so they help define someone else's life. I love how garage/yard sales connect people. My mom used to take me to them every weekend in Eugene, and I loved all the odd little things which I knew had once meant so much to the people now selling them. What about the items once caught their eyes? I always love to try to see it the way they did. Ah, hell, I love just knowing about people, who they are and where they came from. The things they own can say so much to that end.

i love it too and i wish i had more money so that i could go every weekend! the only thing is that sometimes it makes me sad because i would hate to imagine a point in my life where i have to sell everything i have gathered over the years of my life. it is interesting to see what people collected and what they loved and when i find something i want i feel like i am passing a part of that person on by treasuring and loving something they once loved!
