Since I've got some time to spare while I sporadically talk to a friend, this unusual meme looks like fun to answer. I got it from Time_Shark on LJ. (I can't remember how to link directly in this bloody thing.)
Ten Interview Questions for The Next Big Thing
1. What is the title of your book?
Can't Fall Back (Book 3 of "Secrets of the Empire")
2. Where did the idea come from for the book?
It's the third in the series. At that point, ideas come easily.
In particular, this is a big old pivotal point. I delve deeper into House Istevor than I had in the other two, and the idea of the "Istevor Diamond" is a large part of the plot. What is it? What does it do? Does it tie into the siege of the Chosen?
3. What genre does your book fall under?
I call this series space opera, but it's probably small scale space opera. It should feel big and grand, though, regardless of how wide the scale actually is. In terms of the craziness and wild frenzy, it's definitely well inside that genre.
4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
I thought for a time that Milo Ventimiglia has the chameleon appearance of Vespasian Shiraan.
Famke Janssen has the bright red hair for Rochelle Sarakshi, but she's too old.
I have no idea who could play Caspian Acratani.
5. What is a one-sentence synopsis of the book?
An aristocratic commando delves into negotiations for an alliance with a powerful noble, while battling a crazy biologist and stymying an alien invasion.
6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
Self-published all the way. I'll publish myself on Kobo besides the Kindle, Nook and Smashwords sooner or later. Print is a long ways down the line, because it'll be so much more strange to do.
The first two books already are.
7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
I'm in it right now. I am wary of saying the exact word count in public but I'm very much at the start. I hope to have it completed before the year is done.
8. What other books would you compare this story to in your genre?
The original vein of the idea came from the two anime series Gundam Seed and Gasaraki. Typically for me, there's an element of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Dresden Files. I can't think of many other books that are like it.
9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?
I wanted to write a book or series involving demons and giant robots. :)
10. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
Family curses. Problems with cryostasis. Beastmen. Ancient, largely unknown gods and the powers they inflict on human beings. Drugs. Bizarre imagery. People who are going slowly and inexorably insane when the realities come crashing down on them. Revolutionaries. Schemes and plots in an imperial galaxy.
