according to my english teacher, i have to stand in the hall while the class says the pledge because i choose not to stand for my own reasons. my reason being that i don't believe the pledge. especially the "and justice for all". how could that be accurate? well, i don't want special treatment for not standing for the pledge. my teacher ( Read more... )

Gym class, grade 10. I refused to stand for the pledge of allegiance for personal reasons. My reason was that I do not believe in pledging oneself to anything other than the pursuit of happiness and life. I refuse to pledge my life to a flag I don't believe in or a God I don't care about. I believe Chase and Emily joined me in this action, as well. However, they caved in after threats of being kicked out (although Chase might not have been there.. I can't remember). I did not stand up, though, and never got into trouble. That's the benefit of being an "untouchable." Eventually, after making fun of me, everyone got over the fact that I didn't want to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance

I say good for you Derrick. They're supposed to be teaching us to think in school, yet it seems like they're really just teaching us to mindlessly follow orders. You should stand up for your beliefs and your right to free will.

i do and always will. no matter what. she's going to try to make me go in the hall but i will refuse and go to the office. my parents are coming in if they preach to me in the office. i just want to learn! that's all! not debate of whether or not i have to stand for something i don't believe in. it's ridiculous.

thanks, ben.

yeah school is supposed to prepare us for the "real world" and help us develop into model citizens... yet all they do is teach us to follow a dictatorship and never question authority. that completely goes against our nations definition of a good citizen.

i guess i was lucky in that my school never said the pledge... otherwise i might have had a similar problem as you.

i know this kid who's a jehova's witness. they always sat down during the pledge of alleigence or sometimes just stood up but didn't do anything. nobody wanted to bash them.
