What's worse? To tell the truth and hurt someone, or to lie and protect them?

I have a preference towards the truth and a strong sense of apathy towards hurting them, so I usually like to choose the first, but am I wrong in doing so?

if you lie to someone - and then they find out the truth later, it hurts them a lot more than if you just told them the truth in the first place.

But if you lie to them, and they don't find out the truth, no harm is done. Does that make undiscovered lies alright?

i think it would depend on the seriousness of the situation.
