Summary: Cheondong collects his memories of people, preserving them like some preserve flowers by pressing them between the pages of a book. These are his flowers.
He met her when she was six, maybe seven. She smiled shyly at him across the classroom and he smiled back. Her knees weren’t skinned like his and his skin looked tanned next to her pale complexion. She nearly glowed alabaster and he was fascinated. They sat, side by side, on the cracked, uneven sidewalk. He talked about his dreams of becoming a famous painter or maybe a business man. She spoke of illness and the pain caused by too many emotionless doctors.
They sat on that dusty sidewalk day after day. Each listening to the other ramble and never really grasping what the other said. His knees were no longer skinned and her skin glowed a slightly darker hue. A year spiraled past in a mosaic of words and laughter and unrealized anticipation. Then one day, she wasn’t there in class. She didn’t sit beside him on that dirty, lonely sidewalk.
Years later, he remembered her face and her name. It took years to understand where she’d gone, why she’d vanished. Years later, she remained his anemone, his first flower.
