Summary: Cheondong collects his memories of people, preserving them like some preserve flowers by pressing them between the pages of a book. These are his flowers.
They met one frigid winter day. Cheondong slipped on a patch of ice, arms windmilling in a futile effort to regain his balance. His flailing left hand snagged a piece of fabric but it was useless. He hit the ground with a resounding thud and pain shot up his spine. A yelp and then an unexpected weight landed on top of him. He groaned and looked into the biggest brown eyes he’d ever seen in all his fifteen years. She apologized profusely and scrambled to her feet. He wanted to reassure her he didn’t mind her being on top of him, not at all actually, but all that escaped from his mouth was a low moan of pain.
She tried to help him to his feet and the next thing he knew he was on his back on a stretcher. The ambulance siren wailed above his head and EMTs asked him a billion questions. She sat beside him, gripping his hand and attempting a smile of both apology and reassurance.
Hours later, he was home, laying on his right side and wishing for oblivion because every position and movement sent waves of pain through his body. A fractured tailbone, the doctor said. He should try to rest and make sure to take the pain meds prescribed. Of course, don’t take too many, the old man said severely, or you could OD or get addicted.
She visited him every day, bringing chocolates and magazines. He noticed the way her dark hair gleamed in the artificial lights and how her laugh made him feel better than all the pain medication floating in his bloodstream. When she kissed him, tentative and questioning, he fell in love with the feel of her lips.
He smiled fondly at the memory of his heart’s long, slow slide into warm love. He gently fingered the petal of a white lilac and thought of her.
