here "Yay! The first snow of the year!" Yoseob did a little dance at the window.
Hyunseung rolled his eyes at the all too cheerful blond. He didn't mind the cold so much but frozen precipitation caused little joy inside him. He felt grateful the cabin they were "vacationing" in was well-heated and insulated. Otherwise, he might just contemplate stabbing himself in the eye with sharp stick.
"Seungie-ah, we should make hot chocolate with marshmallows. But first we should build a snowman. What do ya think?"
"You woke us all up for snowmen and hot chocolate? You're evil, Yoseob."
"Not just hot chocolate. Hot chocolate with marshmallows." He clapped his hands to his heart with a blissful smile on his face.
"I'm going back to bed." Shuffling towards the bedroom, he grumbled under his breath.
A hand grasping the back of his long-sleeved pj top halted him before he could escape the room. "You're not gonna leave me all alone on such a perfect winter morning, are you, Seungie?" Yoseob's voice was pleading but his grip was demanding.
Hyunseung turned to see big brown eyes begging him from the adorable face he saw frequently in his dreams. It seemed Yoseob was out to torment him on this so-called perfect winter morning. Why he seemed so determined for them to spend it together was beyond Hyunseung's understanding. Sure, the others were already gone, moving surprisingly fast out the door just minutes before he'd managed to crawl out of bed. That was no reason for he and Yoseob to spend the morning together. The blond was bouncy. He was not.
"You'll enjoy all the perfectness of this winter morning better without me." He pried Yoseob's hand from his shirt.
Using his other hand, Yoseob grabbed his wrist. "Please, Seungie-ah. I don't want to spend this morning alone and all the others ran off. And after I went through all the trouble of waking them up, too." He pouted.
Hyunseung sighed. Second choice. Last resort. Of course. It is what he always seemed to be. How could he expect Yoseob to see him any other way? He ruthlessly squashed the knowledge that being the younger man's first choice would more than make up for all the times he'd been considered second best. He knew it was pointless even as being last resort broke off a little chunk of his heart.
"I'd rather be asleep, thanks."
A light died in the depths of Yoseob's eyes. "I see. You'd rather sleep than spend the morning with me."
Ye gods, no, thought Hyunseung. How can he make me feel guilty for wanting to sleep when he only wants to hang out with me because the other members abandoned him? Hyunseung shook his head. The boy did not play fair. "That's not what I meant."
"It's what you said." Yoseob poked out his bottom lip in a more exaggerated pout.
With a helpless sense of inevitability, Hyunseung felt his defenses crumble. It wasn't like he had that many where the blonde was concerned. He could -barely- deal with being Yoseob's second choice but not with the dull look in his eyes. "Fine. Fine. It came out wrong. I meant that I prefer sleeping to playing in the snow. Not to spending time with you." He paused. "If that's what you really want."
With a cheer, Yoseob threw his arms around Hyunseung's neck. "I'll teach you how to prefer playing in the snow with me to sleeping. Come on!"
Reluctantly, knowing he'd prefer to do just about anything with Yoseob to sleeping, Hyunseung followed Yoseob to the door. When he protested they should put on regular clothes he was laughed at and told they'd be all bundled up anyway so what did it really matter. He gave in with a small sigh, pulling heavy winter gear on over his pjs. The joy in Yoseob's eyes was too irresistible.
Outside Yoseob bounded through the snow like a puppy while Hyunseung stood near the cabin's porch like the beleaguered owner of the frisky puppy.
"Build a snowman with me." Yoseob was already piling snow together, forming a rather lopsided ball.
"Why?"
"One because you said you'd play in the snow with me. Two because it is traditional." He raced over, grabbed Hyunseung's hand and tugged him towards the pile of frozen water.
"It's lopsided." He wondered how Yoseob could be so energetic when it was so cold.
"Then let's fix it." Yoseob grabbed his hands and pushed them into the snow.
His gloved hands covering Hyunseung's, he made a great show of having them properly shape the base of the snowman. Once he was satisfied, he took a step back, glanced at the unsmiling Hyunseung, and slipped. He made the most of the fall with a yelp and a great flailing of his arms. Even his often stoic hyung couldn't help but smile a little at the picture he knew he made. He sat up with a disgruntled look on his face. Hyunseung smiled a little more. Yoseob tried to get up, acted like he couldn't and flailed some more. The smile broadened into a grin.
"Need a hand?"
"Duh." He reached out his hand and tugged Hyunseung to the snow.
Startled ending up with a face full of snow, he spluttered and tried to get up. A weight pushed into his side and rolled him to his back. He cursed at having his progress impeded. He cursed a little more when Yoseob wrapped arms and legs around him like a monkey. He wondered why it was the young man had him thinking of cute and sometimes annoying animals. Wriggling and twisted, Hyunseung tried to extricate himself but only managed to start them rolling down the gradual grade of the yard.
As momentum built, Yoseob screamed happily. "A HyunSeob snowball!"
Over and over they went with some help, Hyunseung strongly suspected, from the blond monkey holding onto him. At the bottom, they slid to a halt and Yoseob flopped on his back in the snow. He was giggling like a little kid. A strange pressure build up in Hyunseung's chest and tickled his throat. He blinked rapidly thinking he was on the verge of tears - from the trauma of rolling around in snow. Then a gut-deep laugh bubbled out of his mouth. Next thing he knew he was collapsed against Yoseob while they giggled and laughed until tears leaked down their cheeks.
"Oh. Ah-h-h. It's been ages since I laughed like this." Hyunseung wiped his cheeks, laughter still hiccuping from him randomly.
Yoseob's mirthful expression turned thoughtful before he said, "Let's make some hot chocolate."
"But we haven't finished the snowman yet." He took Yoseob's extended hand and rose to his feet.
"According to the weatherperson, the snow isn't going anywhere. We're suppose to have more later today. And now I'm thirsty and cold."
Inside the cabin, they shed their wet gear at the door and discovered some snow had melted and leaked down into their pajamas. After separate hot showers and dry clothes, they met in the kitchen. Yoseob made the hot chocolate and set a freshly opened package of marshmallows on the table between them. Hyunseung found his good humor continued through the desultory conversation. For the first time since the formation of Beast, he felt completely at ease with one of the members. Somehow, he didn't feel second best or like a last resort.
Maybe it was Yoseob magic, he thought.
"Hey, Seungie-ah."
"Uh-oh." Hyunseung took the last sip of his drink.
"What do you mean 'uh-oh'?"
"You're gonna ask for something. I can tell by that wheedling tone of voice. And you only call me Seungie-ah when you particularly want something."
Yoseob looked down into his mug, avoiding the other man's pointed look. "Can you show me that dance you were working on the other night?"
"Uh-what?" Mouth open in shock, Hyunseung could only stare. "How do you know about that?"
"Well." Yoseob ran a finger around the rim of his empty mug, flicking a nervous glace at Hyunseung's still face. "I sorta saw you practicing it that last night we had free? I went back to the studio for something and heard the music. So I peeked in. I want to learn how to move like you."
"Move like me? You're already a great dancer." Hyunseung suspected from the hurt look on Yoseob's face that his own face was doing its blank mask expression. "I mean, I'll teach you the moves if you want but you won't move exactly like me."
"Oh, that's okay. I just thought I could learn how to move a little more...bonelessly."
With an nod of acquiescence, Hyunseung stood and led the way into the large, sparsely furnished living room. Setting up his music player, he found the song he'd been dancing to, choreographing in reality. Not because the choreography would ever be used but he enjoyed the flow, the creativity of it. He went over the first few counts with Yoseob, helping with his arm placements, advising on how to move just a little more fluidly across the floor. When he thought Yoseob was ready, Hyunseung turned on the song.
They danced for the first bit of the song, moving in sync with an ease due to hours of training. When they struck the last pose he'd taught, Hyunseung praised Yoseob as much because the young man was a good dance as to see the flush of pleasure spread over his cheeks. Turning to pause the music, he stopped short when Yoseob flung his arms around his neck. Cold-chapped lips pressed against Hyunseung's mouth. He stood dumbstruck with his arms dangling at his sides as Yoseob kissed with a sweet sort of desperation.
"Thanks, Seungie-ah." Yoseob stepped back, refused to look him in the eye. "I know spending the morning with me wasn't your first choice."
"Uh."
"I mean, I know you love to sleep and all and I pushed you into this time together. I- hell- I even bribed the others to get up and get out as quickly as possible."
"Huh."
"They wanted to stay in and sleep too, ya know?" Yoseob fiddled with the hem of his shirt.
"You...bribed them. Why?" Thoughts didn't whirl through Hyunseung's head. They backstroked their way through the molasses of shock. No two ideas were connecting to make a coherency of Yoseob's words.
"Ah. Haha. I wanted to spend time with you. You aren't the most accommodating person in that so I used....underhanded means to get my way."
"But." Hyunsueng shook his head. "Why?"
"Because," Yoseob started then took a deep breath. "Ireallyreallylikeyou."
"You like me." Comprehension began to dawn slowly over the horizon of Hyunseung's brain.
"Yea. What's not to like?" He was starting to sound defensive. "You're thoughtful, kind, funny when you want to be, smart, talented, and really pretty."
"I'm not pretty." It was an instinctive response.
"You're pretty. Deal with it. And you are sexy as hell when you dance."
Feeling light, goofy, and more than a little shocked, Hyunseung felt a grin spread across his face. Stupidly, he was sure. "You like me like like me."
"Yes." Beginning to be disgruntled because he was never one to let embarrassment or awkwardness get to him for very long, Yoseob crossed his arms. "So are you just gonna stand there grinning at me?"
Wrapping his arms around Yoseob's shoulders, he pulled him into a tight hug. "I like you too. You're adorable, hyper, hilarious, and daring. And I think you are sexy as hell when you dance."
Yoseob wrapped fierce arms around his waist and squeezed. "Thank god."
"Oh, Christ. Really?" Dismayed tones rang out from the doorway. "First I have to deal with the two Juns hooking up and now you two. Don't even think I'm gonna round it out by hooking up with Kikwang. No way. Nuh-uh."
Yoseob and Hyunseung watched an irritated Dongwoon stalk off before bursting into laughter.
