Hugs, and words of encouragement would have definitely made him feel better- for the time being. Truth of the matter is, it's not up to us to say what would have helped him or not. The extremity of anguish your friend was experiencing is truly unknown to the outside eye. We may however, sympathize, respect, lend a helping hand(with the knowledge that that helping hand might be rejected) and hope for the best. Blaming a tiny part of yourself for his death is superfluous to your own mental health. There is a plethora of reasons why one would kill themselves, and you're not one of them. Of course, things could always be worse. Unfortunately, for your friend, they already were.
Besides that, I want waffles.
I'd also have a tad bit of trouble sleeping if I owned a cannibalistic cat who preys at night. Just sayin'.
